Creative Writing

15 Mar

Have you ever taken the time to write creatively? Well recently I had to write a poem in one of my classes based on what card I was given. Everyone in the class had to write a person on the card and which ever card we got, we had to write a poem. I got a police officer in times square.

A police officer in Times Square

My days are spent standing, walking, and sitting.

I work in the Times Square Police Station.

NYPD Station, 43rd Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue

I stand on the busiest street surrounded by tourists and skyscrapers.

I sense the rush in air as these people live their life working in a busy city.

I hear people talking loudly on their cell phones, talking amongst each other, promoters trying to tourists to their comedy shows, honking of taxis and buses.

I smell savory and salty food from the hotdog carts, halal carts, pretzel carts, and peanut carts.

It makes me hungry as I walk by.

I see the bright lights of billboards and advertisements.

Broadway show billboards the size of a building.

I see the camera flashes as the tourists take pictures of themselves in Times Square.

Tourists walking around with numerous shopping bags.

H&M, Toys “R” Us, Forever 21, Macy’s, American Eagle, and JCPenney’s.

Tourists shop ‘till they drop.

I see the most outrageous characters walking around Time Square: Elmo, Statue of Liberty, Spiderman, The Naked Cowboy, people holding signs for free hugs.

Pigeons flying in all different directions.

Vendors selling New York novelties and artists drawing caricatures.

The smog in the air and the mirage of heat that comes off the automobiles.

The loud sirens of ambulances, cop cars, and fire trucks.

Cars, trucks, buses, taxis, bikers, and people rush by me.

I get asked many questions during the day.

Which way is downtown? Where is the closest subway station?

What train do I take…? Where’s Madison Square Garden? Am I heading the right way?

I wave to the tourists on the Big Apple tour buses as they snap pictures of the most famous landmark in New York City.
