Creative Writing

15 Mar

Have you ever taken the time to write creatively? Well recently I had to write a poem in one of my classes based on what card I was given. Everyone in the class had to write a person on the card and which ever card we got, we had to write a poem. I got a police officer in times square.

A police officer in Times Square

My days are spent standing, walking, and sitting.

I work in the Times Square Police Station.

NYPD Station, 43rd Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue

I stand on the busiest street surrounded by tourists and skyscrapers.

I sense the rush in air as these people live their life working in a busy city.

I hear people talking loudly on their cell phones, talking amongst each other, promoters trying to tourists to their comedy shows, honking of taxis and buses.

I smell savory and salty food from the hotdog carts, halal carts, pretzel carts, and peanut carts.

It makes me hungry as I walk by.

I see the bright lights of billboards and advertisements.

Broadway show billboards the size of a building.

I see the camera flashes as the tourists take pictures of themselves in Times Square.

Tourists walking around with numerous shopping bags.

H&M, Toys “R” Us, Forever 21, Macy’s, American Eagle, and JCPenney’s.

Tourists shop ‘till they drop.

I see the most outrageous characters walking around Time Square: Elmo, Statue of Liberty, Spiderman, The Naked Cowboy, people holding signs for free hugs.

Pigeons flying in all different directions.

Vendors selling New York novelties and artists drawing caricatures.

The smog in the air and the mirage of heat that comes off the automobiles.

The loud sirens of ambulances, cop cars, and fire trucks.

Cars, trucks, buses, taxis, bikers, and people rush by me.

I get asked many questions during the day.

Which way is downtown? Where is the closest subway station?

What train do I take…? Where’s Madison Square Garden? Am I heading the right way?

I wave to the tourists on the Big Apple tour buses as they snap pictures of the most famous landmark in New York City.

Social media overload?

Social Media has taken over many lives. It is now regarded as one of the most powerful communication tools in the world. It is used for branding, advertising, promoting, selling and much more. Every company and business is trying to get onto the social media bandwagon.

People can tweet, check their Facebook, or check in from their iPhone, Blackberry, or Android. Social media is accessible on mobile devices which is easier for everyone to use. I know for a fact that I check my Facebook or Twitter more than five times in a day. It is a click away.  I have a Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. I’m not a big fan of foursquare because of privacy reasons- I don’t need everyone to know where I am or where I go. Also, with so many social media accounts, I always find myself forgetting my passwords.

I wonder what other social media platform is being created right now…

Foster The People

My current obsession in music now is Foster The People. They are an American Indie hipster pop band. Foster The People is a band formed in 2009 in Los Angeles, California. The trio are Mark Foster, Cubbie Fink, and Mark Pontius. They recently performed in the Grammys with Maroon 5 and the Beach Boys.

I am in love with their latest album Torches. I don’t know what makes me love their music but it is great and catchy! I always find myself humming to one of their songs. I plan on seeing them in May when they start their summer tour. The concert will take place on May 29th in Central Park and it is sold out.

Foster The People announced that the band will be releasing a new single by the end of the year and a new album to follow in 2013!

The Latest Internet Craze…Pinterest. Are you pinning?

25 Feb

Image             Are you a Pinterest addict? I’ve been on Pinterest since this summer and it is a good website to go on to kill time or procrastinate from doing homework. Pinterest is a social media website where you can create a virtual bulletin board and you can “pin” images and videos onto the board. Anyone can create a free account and follow each other. People can pin, repin, and like pins. It is said to be the next social media web addiction and on the rise to the top social media websites. You can customize the boards to whatever liking you have. People can upload pictures or links as pins and to share it with the world. People pin apparel, electronics, food, recipes, jewelry, books, movies, art, quotes, photography, music, videos, accessories, cars, travel destinations, DIY (Do It Yourself) projects etc. It’s a great site for people to showcase their hobbies and show their personality.

The online boards can be categorized as Style, Places you want to visit, Recipes, Wedding Inspirations, Health, and much more. People can create boards and pin what relates to the board. Pins can be created by inserting a link or some websites now have a Pinterest Pin button along with their social media buttons such as Facebook, Twitter, and email. Online retail sites having the Pinterest pin button shows that consumers have interest in the product. Check out this article on Pinterest Pins on the top online retail sites on Mashable. Pinterest pin buttons are now on Tory Burch, Aeropostale, Etsy, and Barneys New York. The pin button is located on each of the item’s page.

What I love about Pinterest is that I can pin anything I like such as recipes, pictures, or outfits and I can always go back to it for inspiration. I have boards on food, fashion and style, nail inspirations, humor, and words to live by. I enjoy looking at pins and repinning them. It’s a great go-to website for ideas on projects and recipes. Pinterest reminds me of a scrapbook. I am basically scrapbooking all the things I like and see on Pinterest.

If you don’t know much about Pinterest, I say check it out and see for yourself. Here’s a link you can learn on how to use Pinterest from USA Today. So, are you ready to start pinning?
